Super Delta Male Bettas are beautiful tropical freshwater fish known for their impressive fan-shaped tails, flowing fins and vibrant colours. Their distinctive tail spreads wider than a standard Delta Betta but does not quite reach the full 180-degree spread of a Halfmoon Betta, giving them an elegant, flowing appearance.
Also known as Siamese Fighting Fish, Bettas are intelligent, curious and interactive fish that often learn to recognise their owners and eagerly approach the front of the aquarium at feeding time.
Their striking finnage and individual personalities make them a wonderful centrepiece for a tropical aquarium. Each Super Delta Betta has its own unique colouring and markings, making every fish special.
Care Level: Easy to moderate
Temperament: Territorial, curious and potentially aggressive
Maximum Size: Approximately 5–7 cm
Lifespan: Approximately 3–5 years with proper care
Minimum Tank Size:
A minimum of 20 litres is recommended for one male Super Delta Betta, although a 30–40 litre aquarium or larger is preferred to provide additional swimming space and more stable water conditions.
Due to their large, flowing fins, Super Delta Bettas prefer gentle water movement and aquariums with plenty of comfortable resting areas.
Live plants, smooth decorations and broad leaves near the water's surface help create an ideal environment.
A reliable heater, gentle filtration and secure aquarium lid are essential. Small bowls and unheated containers are not suitable for long-term care.
How Many Should Be Kept Together?
Male Super Delta Bettas must be kept individually, with only one male Betta per aquarium.
Male Bettas are naturally territorial and may fight if housed together, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
Although some individuals may tolerate carefully selected peaceful tank mates in larger aquariums, others are happiest in a dedicated aquarium.
Ideal Water Temperature:
24–28°C, with approximately 25–27°C being an excellent target for everyday care.
Super Delta Bettas are tropical fish and require a reliable aquarium heater to maintain a consistent water temperature.
Water Conditions:
Super Delta Bettas thrive in clean, well-maintained freshwater with gentle filtration and stable water parameters.
-
Ideal pH: Approximately 6.5–7.5
-
Water Flow: Gentle to low
-
Ammonia and Nitrite: 0 ppm
-
Aquarium: Fully cycled and regularly maintained
Like other Bettas, Super Deltas possess a labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric air directly from the water's surface. They must always have clear access to the surface.
Diet:
Super Delta Bettas are primarily carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet to maintain their health and vibrant appearance.
A quality Betta pellet should form the foundation of their diet, supplemented with occasional frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia.
Feed small, controlled portions and avoid overfeeding, as excess food can affect digestion and aquarium water quality.
Compatibility:
Male Super Delta Bettas are generally best kept as the centrepiece of their own aquarium.
Some individuals may tolerate peaceful bottom-dwelling fish or certain snails in larger, carefully planned aquariums. However, compatibility is never guaranteed.
Avoid housing them with other male Bettas, aggressive fish or known fin-nipping species such as Tiger Barbs.
Their long, flowing fins make them particularly vulnerable to damage from unsuitable tank mates.
Things to Be Cautious Of:
-
Delicate Fins: Super Delta Bettas have large, flowing fins that can tear on sharp decorations, rough rocks or hard plastic plants.
-
Strong Water Flow: Their elaborate fins can make swimming against strong currents difficult and tiring. Gentle filtration is important.
-
Aggression: Male Bettas are highly territorial and must never be housed together.
-
Fin Health: Long-finned Bettas can be more vulnerable to fin damage and secondary infections, particularly when water quality is poor.
-
Jumping: Bettas are capable of jumping from aquariums, making a secure lid essential.
-
Cold Water: Consistent tropical temperatures are important for maintaining their health.
-
Resting Areas: Broad-leaved plants, Betta hammocks and smooth decorations near the surface provide comfortable places to rest.
Helpful Notes:
Super Delta Bettas are an excellent choice for fish keepers wanting a colourful, elegant and interactive aquarium companion.
Their beautiful, wide-spreading tails offer a stunning display of colour and movement, particularly in a well-planted aquarium with gentle water flow.
Providing warm, clean water, suitable resting areas and plenty of opportunities to explore will help encourage their natural behaviours.
Please note that exact colours, patterns and fin appearances may vary between individual fish.
