Redcap Fantail Goldfish are an eye-catching fancy goldfish type with a rounded body, flowing double tail, and attractive red-and-white colouring. Like other fancy goldfish, they are peaceful, social fish that are slower swimmers than single-tail varieties, so they need suitable tank mates, strong filtration, and plenty of space. They are not suitable for bowls or tiny tanks.
Care Level: Easy to moderate
Temperament: Peaceful, social, and slow-moving
Maximum Size: Usually around 15–18 cm in aquariums is a practical expectation for fancy goldfish, though size can vary with setup and care.
Minimum Tank Size:
A sensible minimum is around 75 litres for one fancy goldfish, with roughly 40 litres extra for each additional fish. Bigger is always better, because goldfish produce a lot of waste and benefit from extra swimming room and more stable water quality.
How Many Should Be Kept Together?
Redcap Fantails can be kept singly, but they are often best kept with other fancy goldfish in pairs or small groups, provided the tank is large enough and filtration is strong. They should not usually be mixed with fast single-tail goldfish such as comets, as these can outcompete slower fancy fish for food.
Ideal Water Temperature:
A good working range is around 18–24°C, with many guides placing goldfish comfortably in about 18–24°C to 23–24°C for everyday care. They are cooler-water fish and are not suited to tropical community aquariums. Stable temperature is important, and rapid swings should be avoided.
Water Conditions:
Redcap Fantails do best in clean, well-filtered, well-oxygenated water with regular maintenance. Goldfish are heavy waste producers, so strong filtration and routine water changes are a key part of their care. They generally do well in neutral to slightly alkaline water when conditions are stable.
Diet:
They are omnivores and do best on a quality goldfish pellet, ideally a sinking type, along with suitable fresh or frozen foods for variety. Controlled feeding is important, as overfeeding can quickly affect water quality and may contribute to buoyancy issues in fancy goldfish.
Compatibility:
They are best kept with other fancy goldfish or very peaceful, compatible cooler-water species. Avoid aggressive fish, tropical fish that need warmer water, and fast single-tail goldfish that may outswim them at feeding time.
Things to Be Cautious Of:
The biggest caution with Redcap Fantails is that they are often underestimated as an easy small-tank fish, when in reality they need a roomy filtered aquarium and consistent care. If your fish has any head growth, treat it gently and avoid sharp décor, as redcap-oranda types can be more vulnerable around the wen area.
Helpful Notes:
Redcap Fantails are a lovely choice for aquarists wanting a colourful, gentle fancy goldfish, but they do best when kept as a proper long-term aquarium pet rather than a novelty fish. A spacious, filtered setup with other fancy goldfish is the best fit for them.
