Male Betta - Copper Plakat

The Male Copper Plakat Betta is a striking freshwater fish known for its beautiful metallic colouring, compact fins and bold personality. Its shimmering scales can display stunning shades of copper, bronze, gold and silver, with colours appearing differently depending on the aquarium lighting.

Unlike traditional long-finned Bettas, the Plakat variety has shorter fins and a more streamlined appearance, allowing it to swim with greater ease and agility. These active, intelligent fish are naturally curious and often learn to recognise their owners, making them a fantastic centrepiece for a dedicated tropical aquarium.

Minimum Tank Size:

A minimum of 20 litres is recommended for one male Copper Plakat Betta, although a 30–40 litre aquarium or larger is ideal for providing additional swimming space and more stable water conditions.

Plakat Bettas are generally more active swimmers than long-finned varieties, so they appreciate plenty of room to explore. A planted aquarium with hiding places, gentle filtration and a secure lid provides an excellent environment.

Small bowls and unheated containers are not suitable for long-term care.

How Many Should Be Kept Together?

Male Copper Plakat Bettas should be kept individually, with only one male Betta per aquarium.

Male Bettas are highly territorial and may fight if housed together, potentially causing serious injury.

Although some individuals may tolerate carefully selected peaceful tank mates in larger aquariums, others are best suited to living alone.

Ideal Water Temperature:

24–28°C, with approximately 25–27°C being an excellent target for everyday care.

Copper Plakat Bettas are tropical fish and require a reliable aquarium heater to maintain a consistent water temperature.

Diet:

Copper Plakat Bettas are primarily carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet to maintain their health and vibrant appearance.

A quality Betta pellet should form the main part of their diet, supplemented with occasional frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia.

Feed small, controlled portions and avoid overfeeding to help maintain healthy digestion and water quality.

Compatibility:

Male Copper Plakat Bettas are generally best kept as the centrepiece of their own aquarium.

In larger, carefully planned setups, some individuals may tolerate peaceful bottom-dwelling fish, small non-aggressive community species or certain snails.

However, compatibility is never guaranteed, and tank mates should always be monitored closely.

Avoid housing them with other male Bettas, fin-nipping species such as Tiger Barbs, or fish that may trigger territorial behaviour.

Small shrimp may also be viewed as food.

• Aggression: Male Bettas must never be housed together, as they are highly territorial.

• Jumping: Plakat Bettas are particularly agile swimmers and can jump from an uncovered aquarium. A secure lid is essential.

• Strong Water Flow: Although their shorter fins make swimming easier, excessively strong currents can still cause stress.

• Sharp Decorations: Avoid rough ornaments or sharp plastic plants that could damage their fins and scales.

• Cold Water: A heater is required to maintain suitable tropical temperatures.

• Colour Variation: Copper Plakats naturally vary in colour intensity, metallic sheen and markings. Their appearance may also develop as they mature.
