The Black Mamba Samurai Betta is a striking tropical freshwater fish known for its dramatic dark colouring, metallic scales and bold personality. Featuring a deep black body with contrasting silver, white or steel-toned scales, these beautiful Bettas have a distinctive armour-like appearance.
The Samurai variety is particularly admired for its unique scale pattern, which often creates a striking contrast between the dark body and shimmering metallic patches. Each fish has its own individual markings, making every Black Mamba Betta unique.
Like other Siamese Fighting Fish, Black Mamba Bettas are intelligent, curious and interactive. They often recognise their owners and quickly learn to approach the front of their aquarium at feeding time.
Their striking appearance and engaging personalities make them a fantastic centrepiece for a dedicated tropical aquarium.
Care Level: Easy to moderate
Temperament: Territorial, curious and potentially aggressive
Maximum Size: Approximately 5–7 cm
Lifespan: Approximately 3–5 years with proper care
Minimum Tank Size:
A minimum of 20 litres is recommended for one male Black Mamba Samurai Betta, although a 30–40 litre aquarium or larger is preferred for additional swimming space and stable water conditions.
Samurai Bettas are often bred with shorter Plakat-style fins, making them active and agile swimmers that appreciate plenty of room to explore.
A well-planted aquarium with hiding places, smooth decorations and comfortable resting areas near the surface provides an excellent environment.
A reliable heater, gentle filtration and secure aquarium lid are essential. Small bowls and unheated containers are not suitable for long-term care.
How Many Should Be Kept Together?
Male Black Mamba Samurai Bettas must be kept individually, with only one male Betta per aquarium.
Male Bettas are naturally territorial and may fight if housed together, potentially causing serious injury or death.
Although some individuals may tolerate carefully selected peaceful tank mates in larger aquariums, others are happiest living alone.
Ideal Water Temperature:
24–28°C, with approximately 25–27°C being an excellent target for everyday care.
Black Mamba Bettas are tropical fish and require a reliable aquarium heater to maintain a consistent water temperature.
Water Conditions:
Black Mamba Samurai Bettas thrive in clean, stable freshwater with gentle filtration and regular aquarium maintenance.
-
Ideal pH: Approximately 6.5–7.5
-
Water Flow: Gentle to low
-
Ammonia and Nitrite: 0 ppm
-
Aquarium: Fully cycled and well maintained
Like other Bettas, Samurai Bettas possess a labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric air directly from the water's surface. They must always have clear access to the surface.
Diet:
Black Mamba Samurai Bettas are primarily carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet to support their overall health and condition.
A quality Betta pellet should form the foundation of their diet, supplemented with occasional frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia.
Feed small, controlled portions and avoid overfeeding, as excess food can affect digestion and aquarium water quality.
Compatibility:
Male Black Mamba Samurai Bettas are generally best kept as the centrepiece of their own aquarium.
Some individuals may tolerate peaceful bottom-dwelling fish or certain snails in larger, carefully planned aquariums. However, compatibility is never guaranteed.
Avoid housing them with other male Bettas, aggressive fish or known fin-nipping species such as Tiger Barbs.
Small shrimp may also be viewed as food, so caution should be taken when selecting tank mates.
Things to Be Cautious Of:
-
Aggression: Male Bettas are highly territorial and must never be housed together.
-
Diamond Eye: Some heavily metallic-scaled Samurai Bettas may develop a condition commonly called diamond eye, where opaque scaling gradually extends over the eyes and affects vision. Owners should monitor their fish's eyesight and ability to locate food.
-
Jumping: Bettas are capable of jumping from aquariums, making a secure lid essential.
-
Strong Water Flow: Although shorter-finned varieties are generally stronger swimmers, excessive current can still cause stress.
-
Sharp Decorations: Avoid rough ornaments and sharp plastic plants that could damage their fins and scales.
-
Cold Water: Consistent tropical temperatures are important for maintaining their health.
-
Colour Variation: Black Mamba Samurai Bettas can vary in their metallic markings, scale coverage and overall colour intensity. Their appearance may naturally develop as they mature.
Helpful Notes:
Black Mamba Samurai Bettas are an excellent choice for fish keepers looking for something a little different from traditional brightly coloured Bettas.
Their dramatic black colouring and contrasting metallic scales create a unique appearance, particularly under aquarium lighting.
A well-planted aquarium with gentle water movement, comfortable resting areas and plenty of room to explore will help encourage their natural behaviours.
Due to their distinctive metallic scaling, owners should pay particular attention to eye health as the fish matures.
Please note that Black Mamba and Samurai are trade names used for particular colour and scaling patterns rather than separate Betta species. Exact colours, markings and metallic scale coverage may vary between individual fish.
