Halfmoon Bettas are stunning tropical freshwater fish admired for their spectacular flowing fins, vibrant colours and unique personalities. Their name comes from their impressive tail, which can spread to approximately 180 degrees, creating a beautiful halfmoon shape when fully extended.

Also known as Siamese Fighting Fish, Halfmoon Bettas are intelligent, curious and interactive fish that often recognise their owners and approach the front of the aquarium at feeding time.

Their beautiful finnage makes them a standout centrepiece for a tropical aquarium. However, their long, delicate fins mean they require gentle water movement, suitable decorations and carefully selected tank mates.

Each Halfmoon Betta has its own unique colouring and pattern, making every fish special.

Care Level: Easy to moderate

Temperament: Territorial, curious and potentially aggressive

Maximum Size: Approximately 5–7 cm (excluding extended finnage)

Lifespan: Approximately 3–5 years with proper care

Minimum Tank Size:

A minimum of 20 litres is recommended for one male Halfmoon Betta, although a 30–40 litre aquarium or larger is preferred for improved water stability and swimming space.

Due to their large, flowing fins, Halfmoon Bettas are not particularly strong swimmers and prefer aquariums with gentle filtration and minimal current.

Live plants, smooth decorations and resting areas near the surface help create a comfortable environment.

A reliable heater, gentle filter and secure aquarium lid are essential. Small bowls and unheated containers are not suitable for long-term care.

How Many Should Be Kept Together?

Male Halfmoon Bettas must be kept individually, with only one male Betta per aquarium.

They are naturally territorial and may fight if housed with another male, potentially causing serious injury or death.

Although some individuals may tolerate carefully selected peaceful tank mates, others are happiest in a dedicated aquarium.

Ideal Water Temperature:

24–28°C, with approximately 25–27°C being an excellent target for everyday care.

Halfmoon Bettas require warm, stable tropical temperatures and should be kept in an aquarium with a reliable heater.

Water Conditions:

Halfmoon Bettas thrive in clean, stable freshwater with gentle filtration and regular aquarium maintenance.

  • Ideal pH: Approximately 6.5–7.5

  • Water Flow: Low to gentle

  • Ammonia and Nitrite: 0 ppm

  • Aquarium: Fully cycled and well maintained

Bettas possess a special labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric air directly from the water's surface. They must always have unobstructed access to the surface.

Diet:

Halfmoon Bettas are primarily carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet.

A quality Betta pellet should form the foundation of their diet, supplemented with occasional frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia.

Feed small portions and avoid overfeeding, as excess food can affect both digestion and aquarium water quality.

Compatibility:

Male Halfmoon Bettas are generally best kept individually in a dedicated aquarium.

Some individuals may tolerate peaceful bottom-dwelling fish or certain snails in appropriately sized aquariums, although compatibility is never guaranteed.

Avoid housing them with other male Bettas, aggressive fish or fin-nipping species such as Tiger Barbs and some tetras.

Their large, flowing fins make them particularly vulnerable to damage from inappropriate tank mates.

Things to Be Cautious Of:

  • Fin Damage: Halfmoon Bettas have delicate, flowing fins that can tear on sharp decorations, rough rocks or hard plastic plants.

  • Strong Water Flow: Their large fins make swimming against strong currents difficult and exhausting. Gentle filtration is important.

  • Aggression: Male Bettas are territorial and should never be housed together.

  • Fin Health: Long-finned Bettas can be more vulnerable to fin damage and secondary infections, particularly when water quality is poor.

  • Jumping: Bettas are capable of jumping, so a secure aquarium lid is essential.

  • Cold Water: Consistent tropical temperatures are important for maintaining their health.

  • Resting Areas: Broad-leaved plants, Betta hammocks or other smooth resting spots near the surface can help them rest comfortably.

Helpful Notes:

Halfmoon Bettas are a beautiful choice for aquarists looking for an eye-catching, interactive fish with plenty of personality.

While their flowing fins make them particularly impressive, they also require a little extra attention compared with shorter-finned Betta varieties such as Plakats.

A peaceful, well-planted aquarium with gentle water movement, soft resting areas and warm, stable water will help your Halfmoon Betta thrive.

Colours and fin patterns may vary between individual fish.
