Crowntail Male Bettas are striking tropical freshwater fish known for their distinctive spiky fins, vibrant colours and curious personalities. Unlike traditional long-finned Bettas, Crowntails have extended fin rays that reach beyond the webbing, creating a dramatic, crown-like appearance.

Also known as Siamese Fighting Fish, Bettas are intelligent and interactive fish that often learn to recognise their owners and eagerly approach the front of the aquarium at feeding time.

Their unique finnage and bold personalities make them a beautiful centrepiece for a dedicated tropical aquarium. Each Crowntail Betta has its own individual colouring and markings, making every fish special.

Care Level: Easy to moderate

Temperament: Territorial, curious and potentially aggressive

Maximum Size: Approximately 5–7 cm

Lifespan: Approximately 3–5 years with proper care

Minimum Tank Size:

A minimum of 20 litres is recommended for one male Crowntail Betta, although a 30–40 litre aquarium or larger is preferred to provide additional swimming space and more stable water conditions.

Crowntail Bettas prefer gentle water movement, plenty of plants and comfortable resting areas close to the surface.

A reliable heater, low-flow filtration and a secure aquarium lid are essential. Small bowls and unheated containers are not suitable for long-term care.

How Many Should Be Kept Together?

Male Crowntail Bettas must be kept individually, with only one male Betta per aquarium.

Male Bettas are highly territorial and may fight if housed together, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

Although some individuals may tolerate carefully selected peaceful tank mates in a larger aquarium, others are happiest living alone.

Ideal Water Temperature:

24–28°C, with approximately 25–27°C being an excellent target for everyday care.

Crowntail Bettas are tropical fish and require a reliable aquarium heater to maintain a consistent temperature.

Water Conditions:

Crowntail Bettas thrive in clean, well-maintained freshwater with gentle filtration and stable water parameters.

  • Ideal pH: Approximately 6.5–7.5

  • Water Flow: Gentle to low

  • Ammonia and Nitrite: 0 ppm

  • Aquarium: Fully cycled and regularly maintained

Like other Bettas, Crowntails possess a labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric air. They must always have clear access to the water's surface.

Diet:

Crowntail Bettas are primarily carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet to maintain their health and vibrant appearance.

A quality Betta pellet should form the foundation of their diet, supplemented with occasional frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia.

Feed small, controlled portions and avoid overfeeding, as excess food can affect digestion and aquarium water quality.

Compatibility:

Male Crowntail Bettas are generally best kept as the centrepiece of their own aquarium.

Some individuals may tolerate peaceful bottom-dwelling fish or certain snails in larger, carefully planned aquariums. However, compatibility is never guaranteed.

Avoid housing them with other male Bettas, aggressive fish or known fin-nipping species such as Tiger Barbs.

Their distinctive extended fin rays can be damaged by unsuitable tank mates, so careful consideration is important.

Things to Be Cautious Of:

  • Delicate Fins: Crowntails have distinctive extended fin rays that can be damaged by sharp decorations, rough rocks or aggressive tank mates.

  • Strong Water Flow: Their elaborate fins can make swimming against strong currents difficult. Gentle filtration is preferred.

  • Aggression: Male Bettas are territorial and must never be housed together.

  • Fin Health: Crowntails naturally have reduced webbing between their fin rays. This is normal and should not be confused with fin damage, although new tearing, discolouration or deterioration may indicate a health concern.

  • Jumping: Bettas are capable of jumping from aquariums, making a secure lid essential.

  • Cold Water: Stable tropical temperatures are important for their health and wellbeing.

  • Resting Areas: Broad-leaved plants, Betta hammocks and smooth decorations near the surface provide comfortable places to rest.

Helpful Notes:

Crowntail Bettas are an excellent choice for fish keepers wanting a colourful, distinctive and interactive aquarium companion.

Their dramatic crown-like finnage makes them stand out from other Betta varieties, particularly when displayed in a well-planted aquarium with gentle water movement.

Providing warm, clean water, suitable resting areas and plenty of enrichment will help encourage their natural behaviours.

Please note that exact colours, markings and fin appearances may vary between individual fish.
