Calico Fantail Goldfish are a beautiful fancy goldfish variety with a rounded body, flowing double tail, and a striking mix of red, orange, black, white, and blue-toned colouring. In terms of care, they are kept the same way as other fantail goldfish. They are peaceful, social fish, but they are slower and more delicate swimmers than common or comet goldfish, so they need suitable tank mates and a properly maintained aquarium.

Care Level: Easy to moderate
Temperament: Peaceful, social, and slow-moving
Maximum Size: Usually around 15–18 cm in aquariums, depending on care, diet, and setup.

Minimum Tank Size:
A sensible minimum is around 75 litres for one fancy goldfish, with roughly 40 litres extra for each additional fish. Bigger is always better with goldfish, as they are heavy waste producers and benefit from extra swimming room and water stability. A filtered aquarium is essential, and bowls are not suitable.

How Many Should Be Kept Together?
Calico Fantails can be kept singly, but they are often happiest with other fancy goldfish in pairs or small groups, provided the tank is large enough and filtration is strong. They should not be mixed with fast single-tail goldfish, which can outcompete them for food and make them more stressed.

Ideal Water Temperature:
A good working range is around 18–24°C, with many care sources placing goldfish comfortably around 20–23°C for everyday care. They are cooler-water fish and are not suited to tropical community aquariums. Stable temperature is important, and sudden changes should be avoided.

Water Conditions:
Calico Fantail Goldfish do best in clean, well-filtered, well-oxygenated water with regular maintenance. Goldfish create a lot of waste, so strong filtration and regular water changes are important parts of their care. They are fairly adaptable in pH, but stable conditions matter most.

Diet:
They are omnivores and do best on a quality goldfish food, ideally a sinking pellet to help reduce buoyancy problems, along with suitable fresh or frozen foods for variety. Avoid overfeeding, as fancy goldfish are prone to digestive and buoyancy issues.

Compatibility:
Calico Fantails are best kept with other fancy goldfish or very peaceful, compatible cooler-water species. They should not be housed with aggressive fish, tropical fish needing warmer water, or streamlined goldfish that are much faster at feeding time.

Things to Be Cautious Of:
The biggest caution with Calico Fantails is that they are often underestimated as an “easy bowl fish,” when in reality they need a roomy filtered aquarium, steady water quality, and ongoing maintenance. Like other fancy goldfish, their rounded body shape can also make them more prone to swimming and buoyancy issues than slimmer goldfish types.

Helpful Notes:
Calico Fantails are a lovely option for aquarists wanting a colourful, fancy goldfish with a gentle nature. They do best when treated as a proper long-term aquarium pet in a spacious, filtered setup rather than a small decorative tank.
