The Betta Nemo Male is a stunning freshwater fish known for its vibrant, multi-coloured patterns and impressive flowing fins. Inspired by the colourful markings of a clownfish, Nemo Bettas often display a beautiful combination of orange, red, yellow, white, black and blue, with each fish featuring its own unique pattern.

Also known as Siamese Fighting Fish, Bettas are intelligent, curious and full of personality. They often recognise their owners and will come to the front of the aquarium at feeding time. Their striking appearance and interactive nature make them a fantastic centrepiece for a dedicated tropical aquarium.

Due to their naturally territorial behaviour, male Bettas are best kept individually rather than with other Bettas.

Care Level: Easy to moderate

Temperament: Territorial, curious and potentially aggressive

Maximum Size: Approximately 5–7 cm

Lifespan: Approximately 3–5 years with proper care

Minimum Tank Size:

A minimum of 20 litres is recommended for one male Betta, although a 30–40 litre aquarium or larger provides additional swimming space and more stable water conditions.

Bettas prefer gentle water movement, plenty of plants and comfortable resting areas near the surface. A heater, gentle filtration and a secure lid are essential. Small bowls and unheated containers are not suitable for long-term care.

How Many Should Be Kept Together?

Male Bettas should be kept individually, with only one male Betta per aquarium.

Male Bettas are highly territorial and should never be housed together, as fighting can result in serious injuries or death.

Although some males may tolerate carefully selected peaceful tank mates, others are happiest living alone.

Ideal Water Temperature:

24–28°C, with approximately 25–27°C being an excellent target for everyday care.

Bettas are tropical fish and require a reliable aquarium heater to maintain a consistent temperature, particularly during the cooler months.

Water Conditions:

Bettas thrive in clean, well-maintained freshwater with gentle filtration and stable water parameters.

  • Ideal pH: Approximately 6.5–7.5

  • Water flow: Gentle to low

  • Ammonia and nitrite: 0 ppm

  • Aquarium: Fully cycled and regularly maintained

Bettas have a special labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe air from the water's surface. They must always have access to the surface, even in a well-oxygenated aquarium.

Diet:

Bettas are primarily carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet.

A quality Betta pellet should form the foundation of their diet, supplemented with occasional frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia.

Feed small portions and avoid overfeeding, as uneaten food can quickly affect water quality.

Compatibility:

Male Bettas are generally best suited to a dedicated aquarium.

In larger, carefully planned aquariums, some individuals may tolerate peaceful bottom-dwelling fish or certain snails. However, compatibility is never guaranteed.

Avoid housing them with other male Bettas, fin-nipping species such as Tiger Barbs, or brightly coloured and long-finned fish that may trigger territorial behaviour.

Things to Be Cautious Of:

  • Aggression: Male Bettas are territorial and must never be housed together.

  • Strong Water Flow: Bettas, particularly long-finned varieties, can struggle against strong currents.

  • Sharp Decorations: Rough rocks, plastic plants and sharp ornaments can damage their delicate fins.

  • Jumping: Bettas are capable of jumping, so a secure aquarium lid is important.

  • Cold Water: They require stable tropical temperatures and should not be kept in unheated bowls.

  • Colour Changes: Nemo Bettas often carry marble-pattern genetics, meaning their colours and markings may naturally develop or change as they mature.

Helpful Notes:

Every Nemo Betta is unique! As this listing is for assorted colours, the exact colour combination and pattern of the fish supplied will vary.

A well-planted aquarium with soft resting areas, gentle filtration and low water movement will help your Betta feel secure and display its natural personality.

Their curious behaviour, beautiful colours and individual personalities make Nemo Bettas a rewarding choice for fish keepers who want a standout aquarium companion.
